Weathered Sculpture
by Dan Dempster

Phloem
Phloem Copyright Daniel C. Dempster, 1995. Steel, 96 x 36 x 14 inches. Phloem was originally mounted on a tree in 2 acres of woods in Virginia. It consists of a curved steel plate with filaments of stainless steel wire cascading out of it, into to the ground. It is now installed in a California vineyard. SOLD
Phloem and Moment
Phloem and Moment Copyright Daniel C. Dempster, 1996. Moment: Steel, 280 x 12 x 7 inches. Moment is a piece of crushed steel balanced with bundles of stainless steel wire arcing from either end. It is shown here behind Phloem at Fulcrum Gallery SoHo in "The Water Planet" in 1996.
FelixMoment
Felix and Moment Copyright Daniel C. Dempster, 1996. Felix: Steel, 140 x 18 x 18 inches. Hurricane Felix hit Bermuda in 1995. Amongst the dross and wreckage washed up on the beaches were a number of compression floats - very old and very weathered. Each is juxtaposed with the sinuous curve of a bundle of stainless steel wire led through the core and balanced off-centre.
The Water Planet
Felix and Moment with Deepscape. Copyright Daniel C. Dempster, 1996. Deepscape: Steel, 144 x 42 inches. The combination of steel, rain, oil films, heat and condensation form intricate capillary patterns of rust on the steel surface.
