Home |To many Bermudians and visitors, Grape Bay holds special memories. In November, 1997 Mr. Dempster spent a month at Rendevous Cottage, studying the textures and formations of the beach. Within the span of two weeks the beach was stripped of several feet of sand, covered and stripped again. The longshore drift and pounding seas make this phenomenon a fairly regular occurrence on most South Shore beaches, but nowhere are the newly exposed rocks and pools as well-known as at Grape Bay. In Bermuda, a gorgeous beach is literally no more than a mile away from anywhere. But living in Bermuda we take it for granted, growing preoccupied with a pace of life which keeps us from the magic of this island. As we drive past the sparkling blues and turquoises, we might idly reminisce about the last time we walked barefoot on the hot, pink sand. We might briefly consider stopping to look at the ocean, but to actually go in? We'd get all sandy and have to brush it off our feet before getting in the car - never mind the tar. Don't have the time, anyway. So we comfort ourselves by dismissing the experience of the beach as essentially the same... We really aren't missing much, are we? How can something we know already be unique and fresh again? That is exactly the point.
